Eilean Donan Castle is a famous and picturesque castle located near the village of Dornie, in the western Highlands of Scotland.
It is one of the most iconic and recognised castles in Scotland. The castle is situated on a small tidal island where three lochs; Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh, meet.
Dating back to the 13th century, Eilean Donan Castle has a rich history. The castle was originally built in 1220 as a defence against the Vikings.
Over the centuries, the castle underwent multiple expansions and renovations. However, in 1719, during the Jacobite uprising, government warships partially destroyed Eilean Donan.
Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap restored it to its former glory in the early 20th century, after it remained in ruins for almost two centuries.
Today, Eilean Donan Castle is open to the public and serves as a popular tourist attraction. It offers visitors a glimpse into Scotland’s medieval history, featuring well-preserved rooms, artefacts, and displays. Photographers and filmmakers love the castle’s stunning location, perched on the island with the scenic Scottish Highlands as a backdrop.
Ample free car parking is available and large parties and groups are welcome.
